Marble extracted from the Wunsiedel pit has been a long time in the making: Over the course of 600 million years, deposits of solidified marine detritus were subjected to intense heat and pressure far below the earth’s surface. Having crystallized, the coarse, white rock is now extractable, having risen back to the earth’s surface in a more recent geological era. Wunsiedel marble is one of Europe’s oldest natural stones.
The crystals found in Wunsiedel marble are characterized by their unique form, making it highly reflective of light. Deposits of graphite and iron oxides add colorful accents, in hues that range from light grey to yellow and pink. Wunsiedel marble is resistant to frost and other environmental factors. With a compressive strength of some 100 N/mm², it is used most commonly in the ceramics, chemicals and pharmaceuticals industries, as well as in metal manufacturing.
Wunsiedel marble is most often processed into terrazzo tiles from high-quality grit. Erratic blocks, quarry stone and slabs are commonly acquired by sculptors and landscape designers.
